Edinburgh International Book Festival

The Edinburgh International Book Festival is the largest public celebration of books in the world, with over 900 authors from over 55 different countries appearing in roughly 1000 events every August.

The Edinburgh International Book Festival (EIBF) is an 18-day long festival in a purpose-built tented village in and around Charlotte Square Gardens in Edinburgh, welcoming over 250,000 people to its site during August. The charity is committed to helping audiences of all ages discover the joys of reading and the power of books, in particular younger readers - the Children's and Schools Programmes inspire around 30,000 children each year. EIBF makes its programme and site accessible to all visitors, and curates a number of events suitable for audiences with a range of different needs and abilities.

Scottish, British and international authors such as Ian Rankin, David Walliams, Julia Donaldson, George RR Martin, Jung Chang, Margaret Atwood, Malala Yousafzai, Chelsea Clinton and Haruki Murakami are brought together with lesser-known and debut writers - some of whom go on to become household names themselves - to share words and ideas and to engage audiences in conversations about topical issues. Audiences can take part in the discussions, meet their heroes and have their books signed too.

Thanks to support from players of People's Postcode Lottery, EIBF also delivers events in communities around Scotland, often working in areas of high socio-economic deprivation and low cultural engagement. The charity is able to ensure that people from a diverse range of backgrounds can be enthused and motivated about books, stories, and creativity.
